Bulk Matter Creation & Request Errors

If your bulk Matter upload fails, Brightflag will display an error message indicating which row or field caused the issue. Most failures are due to formatting or invalid values in the spreadsheet.

Below are the most common errors and how to fix them.


❌ Error: “There was an issue processing the data in this row”

What This Means

One or more fields in the specified row contains an invalid value.

Most Common Cause: Internal Matter Lead

Issue

  • The Internal Matter Lead field does not contain a valid email address.

Accepted format

  • jane.doe@clientcompany.com

Not accepted

  • ❌ Names (e.g. Jane Doe)

  • ❌ Job titles (e.g. Legal Contact)

  • ❌ Any non-email text

How to Fix It

  1. Open your bulk upload spreadsheet.

  2. Locate the row referenced in the error.

  3. Find the Internal Matter Lead column.

  4. Replace the value with a valid email address.

  5. Save the file and re-upload it.


❌ Error: Value not found

What This Means

The value entered does not exactly match an available option in Brightflag.

Common Fields Affected

  • Entity

  • Department

  • Matter Category

  • Country

How to Fix It

  • Compare the value in your spreadsheet with how it appears in Brightflag.

  • Update the spreadsheet to match spelling, spacing, and capitalization exactly.

  • If you’re unsure what values to use, contact your client before re-uploading.


❌ Error: Duplicate Customer Matter ID or Matter Reference

What This Means

Each Matter must have a unique Customer Matter ID and Matter Reference.

How to Fix It

  • Check for duplicate values in these columns.

  • Update the duplicates so each row has a unique value.

  • Save and re-upload the file.


❌ Error: Invalid currency

What This Means

The currency field is not using the required format.

How to Fix It

  • Use a 3-letter ISO currency code only

    • ✅ USD, GBP, EUR

    • ❌ $, USDollars, GBP (£)


❌ Error: Upload failed due to template changes

What This Means

The spreadsheet structure was modified.

How to Fix It

  • Re-download the original template from Brightflag.

  • Ensure:

    • No columns were removed

    • No columns were renamed

    • No columns were reordered

  • Copy your data into the fresh template and re-upload.
