LEDES Error BF124: Law Firm User Does Not Have Access to Matter Referenced

  • Updated

What This Error Means

You are uploading a LEDES invoice, but the matter listed in your LEDES file cannot be validated.

This error happens for one of two reasons:

  1. You do not have access to the matter in Brightflag.

  2. The matter details in your LEDES file do not exactly match the matter in Brightflag.

If either condition is not met, the upload will fail.

How to Resolve It

Step 1: Check That You Can Access the Matter

  1. Log in to Brightflag.

  2. Search for the matter listed in your LEDES file.

If you work across multiple offices, make sure you are logged into the correct office.

Some matters are only visible within a specific office.

Step 2: If You Can Find the Matter

Confirm that the details in your LEDES file exactly match Brightflag, including:

  • Matter Reference / Matter ID (Customer Matter ID)

Even small differences (extra spaces, missing characters, incorrect ID) can cause this error.

If needed, update your LEDES file so it matches Brightflag exactly, then regenerate and re-upload.

Step 3: If You Cannot Find the Matter

If the matter does not appear in Brightflag:

  • Contact your client’s Brightflag Admin.

  • Ask them to:

    • Grant you access to the matter, or

    • Confirm whether the matter has been created

Brightflag Support cannot grant matter access or create matters.

Once access is confirmed and the matter details match exactly, re-upload your LEDES invoice.
