LEDES Error BF104: Insecure Content

  • Updated

What This Error Means

You are uploading a LEDES invoice, and Brightflag found a character in the invoice that should not be there.

It means there is an extra symbol or piece of text inside one of the line item fields in your LEDES file.

The error message will pinpoint to exactly where this 'insecure content' is.

How to Resolve It

Step 1: Open the File

Open your LEDES file using:

  • Notepad (Windows), or

  • TextEdit in Plain Text mode (Mac)

If you are unable to find the issue in the text view, see:
👉 How to View a LEDES File in Excel

Step 2: Go to the Line in the Error Message

Look at the Brightflag error.

Scroll to that exact field in your file.

Step 3: Look for a Strange Character

Look carefully for:

  • Extra quotation marks

  • Any symbol that looks out of place

These usually appear in the description field.

Delete the unusual character.

Save the file.

Step 4: Upload the File Again

After saving the file, upload it again.

If You See Lots of Strange Symbols

If the file looks full of code or strange characters:

Do not try to fix it manually.

Go back to your billing system and export the LEDES file again.

Make sure it is exported as a proper LEDES format (for example, LEDES 98B or 98BI).
